Ford Expedition key fob battery

29 of the 30 model years listed for the Ford Expedition have a proven battery. The most common answer is CR2032. Rows below run oldest to newest; a year can appear twice when the car came with more than one kind of key.

Changing the battery

Separate remote fob

  1. The remote is a small standalone unit. You will not need to touch the ignition key at all.
  2. Look for a screw on the back or a notch on the edge. Remove the screw if present, then twist a coin in the notch to split the case.
  3. Replace the cell, keeping the + side where it was, and check the small metal tab still touches it.
  4. Reassemble and test from a short distance.

This key takes two CR2016 cells. Change both at the same time and stack them the way the old pair sat; mixing a fresh cell with a tired one shortens the life of the new one.

A CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 share the same width but not the same thickness, so a swap between them can leave a loose contact or a case that will not close.

Key with remote in the head

  1. The remote electronics sit in the plastic head of the key itself, so there is no separate fob to open.
  2. Work a thin flat tool into the seam near the blade and twist; go round slowly if it does not open at once.
  3. Inside you may find a small circuit board in a tray. Lift the board out if the cell is underneath, swap the cell with the same side up, and refit the board.
  4. Close the head, check there is no gap, and try the buttons.

Smart key (push-button start)

  1. Find the small release on the edge or back of the fob and hold it while you pull out the metal emergency key.
  2. The gap left by the metal key usually has a pry point. A slow twist with a thin flat tool (tape on the tip saves the plastic) opens the two halves.
  3. Pop the old battery out with a toothpick or plastic pick, not a metal blade, and seat the new one with the + side matching the old one.
  4. Snap the halves back together, slide the metal key home, and press each button, then try the start button from the driver's seat.

Ford intelligent access fobs usually have a release for the emergency key. The key blade itself fits the pry slot.

A CR2450 is 24.5 mm across and 5.0 mm thick, much fatter than a CR2032. A thinner cell will rattle and lose contact, so buy the exact size.

Flip key

  1. Swing the key blade open first. On most flip keys the cell lives in the body behind the hinge.
  2. Find the seam or small slot on the body (often at the end away from the blade) and twist a coin or small flat screwdriver in it until the cover lifts.
  3. Lift the cell out with a plastic tool and press in the new one with the + side matching.
  4. Clip the body closed, fold the blade, and test the buttons from a few steps away.

Keep spare coin cells away from small children. A swallowed coin cell can burn the throat within hours; if it happens, go to an emergency room at once.
